Grammar exercise 4 - Prepositions

I found another website to do some grammar exercises. I decided to do "Prepositions".
Prepositons are very confusing for me. Most of the time I use a wrong prepositon, so I tried to work on this this week. I did this exercise twice, and had a few mistakes in the first try.

Formula One in Melbourne

This weekend was the Formula One GP in Melbourne. Jenson Button finished first, followed by his team member Rubens Barrichello. Both belong to “Brawn” who joined the Formula One this year. I’m actually not that much interested in Formula One anymore, but I think it is a big event here in Australia, especially for people in Melbourne. I used to watch a lot Formula One during the time where “Michael Schumacher” was driving.

A magical evening

The context

I met Sebastian during “Orientation Week” here at Murdoch. He’s from Malaysia. One evening I invited him and his cousin Abby, who is studying at Murdoch as well for dinner at my sisters place.

The topic of the conversation

Sebastian is doing card tricks for seven years now, so we talked about that and that he was working in Germany at the “Oktoberfest” to earn some money with that. He also had his deck of cards with him and she showed us some impressive tricks. One of his best tricks is the “shapeshifter”. He shakes a card, and then the card is changing. I have no idea how he is doing that but it is very impressive.

What I learned

I learned some new vocabulary, the names of the different cards, but unfortunately not how to do these tricks ;-)

Reflection

This evening was fun. I have seen some people doing kind of those tricks on tv, and I always thought that this is probably fake. In this case, the person was sitting right in front of me, so it was even more impressive, because you have no idea what’s going on.

Grammar exercise 3 - Present perfect simple or continuous

The topic of my grammar exercise today was the present perfect simple or continuous. I find myself often mixing up tenses and not knowing which tense I have to use. So I thought this one was good to improve my weaknesses.

Data, cash taken in ATM swindle

I read this article today and was surprised that this is the first time something like that happened in WA. Personal and financial details from hundreds of customers were stolen. This happened at a Bank West ATM in Scarborough. Bank West takes this incident very seriously and the police of WA is trying to find these people.

Twiggy Sticks

The context

After spending a great day on the beach, my sister and I decided to go to Coles because we were quite hungry. We decided to have a BBQ this evening and were planning to invite some friends for dinner. We went straight to the butcher inside and ordered some food.

The topic of the conversation

After ordering sausages, some kangaroo meat and steaks, the woman asked me if we want to have some “Twiggy Sticks” as well. I was quite confused because I have never heard that before. So I decided to ask what it is.

What I learned

“Twiggy Sticks” are sort of small dried sausages. You could compare it to a german “Bifi”. I don’t know if you could buy “Bifi” here in Australia . The name comes from an english model called Twiggy Lawson. She was pretty famous and had thin legs like the food. Her nickname was “Sticks”.

Reflection

I really like “Twiggy Sticks” and I’m happy that the woman asked us to buy some.

Otherwise I probably would have never bought some. This is a good type of food to start a perfect BBQ :)
