A magical evening

The context

I met Sebastian during “Orientation Week” here at Murdoch. He’s from Malaysia. One evening I invited him and his cousin Abby, who is studying at Murdoch as well for dinner at my sisters place.

The topic of the conversation

Sebastian is doing card tricks for seven years now, so we talked about that and that he was working in Germany at the “Oktoberfest” to earn some money with that. He also had his deck of cards with him and she showed us some impressive tricks. One of his best tricks is the “shapeshifter”. He shakes a card, and then the card is changing. I have no idea how he is doing that but it is very impressive.

What I learned

I learned some new vocabulary, the names of the different cards, but unfortunately not how to do these tricks ;-)

Reflection

This evening was fun. I have seen some people doing kind of those tricks on tv, and I always thought that this is probably fake. In this case, the person was sitting right in front of me, so it was even more impressive, because you have no idea what’s going on.

  1. I would like to see some of them too. I had a student in Japan who was great at those tricks. It always amazed me.
